Men’s grooming, skincare and, well, even what is socially acceptable for men to do with their appearance changes constantly.
I’ve talked about a lot of topics here that I think are pretty normal for guys. Shaving, washing your face, etc., but today well I got a package in the mail that changes all that. Today I got a sample of Three Custom Color Specialists’ makeup for men.
Makeup for men, are you serious?
I’ve been on TV a few times so I’ve been in a makeup chair and that didn’t bother me much. It was for a good reason, you have to look good on TV and such. This is different though, this is stuff is to put on to make yourself look good off camera too.
I have some some eyeliner (flesh coloured, to make your eyes look better), eyebrow gel (tame that bushy look), pressed powder (no shine here!), blush (well you know…), and concealer (to even things out, just like on TV). Have I tried it yet? Not yet. Will I? Yep, sure will.
You can start laughing now.
You might think I’m nuts, believe me my channel mates in Beauty & Style were dying laughing about this today. Especially since I have to learn how to put the stuff on! However, I’m thinking why not try it? Why not see if I can look better and not look like I’m wearing makeup?
Remember, back in 18th century men wore makeup. Remember not long ago, men didn’t colour their hair or get their ears pierced. I’ve had highlights (probably wouldn’t again, they didn’t look too great on me) and I have both my ears pierced.
Times change, style changes, and we do to.
So with some help from the amazing Christina Jones and the magic of Skype video chat, I’m going to learn how to do this. Yes, there will be before and after pictures.
First, I have to visit the drug store and get some makeup brushes, and listen to more laughter. Or maybe she’ll think it’s cute and I’ll get a date. You just never know.

Living on the West Coast of Canada, I can’t swing a stick without hitting some add or product that is “organic” (allow me my pet peeve. In chemistry, something that has carbon is “organic”, so I’d like to see an apple without carbon, enough said). You can buy and “organic” version of just about everything now, including health & beauty and grooming products, so the question is: Are they worth it?
Trying out some spiffy new Google Blog Search searches I came upon this post for on organic shaving cream:
If you shave daily, organic shaving cream is the wisest choice because it wont cause irritation, dryness or skin rashes. There is no need to worry about allergic reactions, itching or other side effects because the ingredients are organic. It is easy on the skin while providing soothing moisture.–Organic Shaving Cream For Healthy Skin: Organic Shaving Cream - A Healthier Alternative
My gut reaction is, uh huh–pass. There are some things that I try to buy organic, but often the price difference is just too much. So would I pay a premium for shaving cream that is made from “all organic ingredients”? Yeah not likely.
Natural ingredients? Good stuff that I know is good for skin (shea butter, herbs, etc)? Yeah no problem.
My opinion is, unless proven otherwise by trying organic products, that they aren’t going to be worth the premium price. It’s going to have to be a really, really good shave to make it worth it. Having tried some stuff that gives a really, really good shave (and is premium priced), I can’t imagine how having organic ingredients is going to make a huge difference.

Last week I briefly mentioned Espa’s shaving mud and skin tonic spray in my shaving post and the whole “shaving mud” thing caught people’s attention. Funny a skin tonic face spritz/spray didn’t get as many comments.
Regardless let’s start with the shave mud. The Espa site describes it as:
A unique concept combining an effective shaving preparation with a deep-cleansing mask. The first action of this rich-textured shaving mud will help your razor glide across the skin for perfect tracking and a close shave. The second action of SHAVEMUD is to deep cleanse and purify with white China clay (Kaolin) renowned for its highly absorbent properties helping to draw out excess oil and impurities. Ideal for sensitive skins, your face will be left feeling, smooth, cool and refreshed. For best results leave on whilst brushing teeth, shave, then rinse off.
SHAVEMUD - SMOOTH SHAVE AND PURIFYING MUD
When you use it for the first time, it’s a little strange. It doesn’t lather, and I was wondering how well it would work, but hey I was game.
My first shave with it was great and I didn’t even follow the directions! You’re supposed to let it sit for a couple minutes to let it do its good stuff to your skin. Since then I’ve used it a couple times and waited. Did I notice a huge difference? Nope. So if you’re in a rush, just slather and shave.
The feeling of your skin, post-shave, is odd. Whatever that clay does in the stuff, it certainly makes your skin feel great. Very, very clean.
The Espa shave mud runs for about $35 a tube. For me this wouldn’t be a daily shave, but a hot date, special occasion, etc kind of shave.
I was also sent something I would never consider trying, but since that’s what I’m here for. Yep I actually tried a skin spritzer.
SKINTONIC - HERBAL SPAFRESH SPRITZER
Espa describes this tonic/spritz as:
This reviving herbal spritz instantly tones and refreshes the skin. With rosemary to help boost the skin’s circulation and calming tea tree, lavender and English peppermint to actively hydrate. Ideal to use after shaving, your skin will feel instantly refreshed. Suitable for all skin types and ideal for those with oily or problematic skin.
Yeah, I know. Doesn’t sound great or manly. Okay it isn’t manly, but you know it does smell and feel good. The first time I tried it, I figured it was like aftershave or cologne. You know, spray on hands, pat on face. Yeah, that isn’t the way you do it.
You close your eyes and spray on your face directly. Ahh. Well it does make a difference and I found it was nice after a rough shave or just before going out.
Again, this is about $35 a bottle. I’ve been using it sparingly, of course.
Is having a good shave, smelling great, and having good skin unmanly?
I’ve been taking some good-natured ribbing about this blog. Heck, it’s the subject of daily conversation at the b5media offices. So I have to wonder, am I nuts doing this?
Yeah, just a bit. But, on the other hand lots of guys would like to look and smell good. And being guys we don’t want to spend a lot of money or time doing it.
So, I might take ribbing, but they are talking and reading. I bet even learning something too.

A little teaser here because I’m still working on details like the prizes, but I thought I’d get you all thinking.
I thought to mark the first month of Manscaping 101 and Father’s Day we’d have a little contest here and here’s what it’s going to be: your best shaving face.
You know when you shave you make a few pretty great faces to get a great shave. Puffed cheeks, stretches, all of them and well the best ones are going to win something.
Once I have all the details, we’ll get the contest going but this is how it’s going to work.
You send me or post a link to your best shaving picture and the rest of the Beauty & Style channel will judge them.
Right now I’m hoping to give out prizes to the top four or five pictures for things like best overall, funniest, more awkward, etc … get thinking, get posing, and get snapping.

Kori just launched a new blog here in the old B&S channel called Glamour Gift Guide and like a good channel-mate I took a look. Okay, from a guy’s perspective it’s more for ideas to buy for your special person, but this Shemergency Survival Kit caught my eye:
Ms. & Mrs. also sells several different survival kits for brides, grooms, bridesmaids, expectant moms and more. Source: Shemergency Survival Kit
Following the link to Ms. & Mrs., I found the “Working Guy Survival Kit” which comes with these essentials:
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Dental Floss
- Lip Balm
- Mints
- Pain Reliever
- Nail Clipper
- Hair Comb
- Deodorant
- Facial Tissues
- Lint Remover
- Stain Remover
- Static Guard®
- Wrinkle-Free®
- Mending Kit
- Shoe Shine Sponge
- Adhesive Bandages
- Shaving Cream
- Razor
- Interior Mirror
Checking through the site the kit for grooms (which should have a barf bag and antacids, IMHO) and college students are pretty interesting.
Which leads me to wonder about what is in our various shave/dop whatever kits we travel with. But that’s a topic for another post.

I think I’ve tried more shaving products in the past (nearly) month than I have ever in my life. Not only different gels or soaps, but whole new products like shaving mud. Yes, I said mud. I’ll get to that in a minute.
Quick, fast, and stubbly
You ever wonder why guys don’t shave every day if they don’t have to? For me it’s a combination of time and whether or not I’m going to see anyone of import later. If I’m running late, I’ll skip the shave. Even if I have time I’ll skip the shave … if I’m not going out or anything (or out somewhere where a little stubble is okay).
Why don’t I just go for the “quick shave”? Sometimes I do. Just have to sometimes. The thing is, I thing the art of the great shave is being lost. Gillette Fusion razors aren’t to blame. Nor is the decline of the DE razor and the shaving brush.
The art of the shave has been lost because I don’t think we really care much anymore.
Enjoyment of the process is part of the solution
Yeah, I’m going out there on this idea. Come on we all want the nice, smooth shave that the swimsuit model will go oooh aaahh over when caressing your face. That isn’t the point. You can get smooth, pretty easily. The new razors and gels can have you going from Grizzly Adams to baby’s butt in nothing flat.
The thing is I think we’ve forgotten how to enjoy a really good shave. Heck I think we’ve forgotten how to even have a really great shave.
I’m thinking we have to get into the whole process of shaving again. Maybe appreciate products that don’t cost a fortune, but feel and smell good. I really don’t think that’s too much to ask or unmanly. No, I don’t want to smell like horse sweat and leather. I’ll pass.
Since I’ve been trying a bunch of things lately, including the whole pre-shave wash thing, I have some ideas here.
Wash, lather, rinse, repeat
Yep, I’m getting into the pre-shave scrub. Heck I even exfoliated this morning. Yeah, no kidding. Felt good though. I’ve been paying attention to shaving more too … not just the slathering soap/gel/cream/mud on, but slow even stokes. Rinsing the razor often.
Noticing a difference? You bet I am.
I’ve been getting into the shave brush thing. Yeah it’s cool. The Cella shave soap/cream took some getting used to, but wow. You know I can get a smooth shave even with a razor on it’s last legs using the “good stuff”.
Then there is something I didn’t think would work or feel good, and holy smokes was I wrong.
Shave mud.
Yep, shave mud. Just like the stuff used for facials, but with some extras (like scent) added in to make it a shaving product.
It’s from Espa and costs about $35. Pricey, no doubt, but I really, really like how it feels.
I’ve used it a couple of times now. First time just slather and shave. I noticed right away that my skin felt different. Good different. Smooth, clean. I know seems really strange. In fact, it shaves and cleans so well that my face squeaked as the razor passed over it. Now that’s close.
Second time I, erm, read the directions. You’re supposed to leave the stuff on for a minute or two for “maximum effect” They suggest brushing your teeth, clearly they don’t realize that guys fill a basin of water for a shave. I’m not spitting into my nice hot shaving water, thank you very much.
Regardless I did wait, and yep, noticeable difference. Better shave, cleaner skin.
Espa also sent me a facial spritz, refresher thing … yeah I was a skeptic. But, it does feel good. Right after a great shave, spray and cologne and I’m feeling great.
Both these products are pricey. About $35 each. Use them every day? The spritz more often than the mud, but yeah when I want to have an awesome shave (hot date, event, etc), I’m going full on manscaping here.
Take the time, enjoy the process a bit, have a great shave
I’m not going to suggest that we all need to dawdle our way through the morning shave. Hell no. Sometimes you just have to do it fast. Doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it still. Good soap, really the brush and the shave stick or Cella don’t take much more time, shave like you care and rock on.
Come on guys, if we’ve got to do this every day, we might as well enjoy it.
