Whoa straight razor, now that’s hardcore shaving

A new reader sent me a link today with the top 10 reasons you should try a straight razor—10 Reasons to Shave With a Straight Razor—I love shaving humour.  Seriously most of the tips are applicable to DE safety razors as well.
I’m still not up for trying and the biggest reason is that I’m a […]

John Allan’s Splash After Shave from Shaving Stuff

After trying a lot of after after shave balms, I’ve noticed that they are “new school”  creams to sooth the skin, but what about the old school alcohol-based ones with a “bite” to them?  Well Russell at Shaving Stuff tried the the John Allan’s splash and was both shocked and surprised:
[A plea to […]

Essentials for Him Prepped shave oil: nice treat for your face

I hadn’t really heard of or tried pre-shave oils or shave oils until recently.  The premise is simple of course, a nice skin-friendly (good smelling is nice, but not critical to the function) oil that you put on before your shave creme/gel or use alone.
Regardless of gel, creme, soap, or oil the idea around […]

SIRCUITSkin products: nice, simple, and effective.

I received several samples of SircuitSkin’s “cosmeceuticals” Smooth Operator shave creme, x-trap face wash, and Cool Aid after shave balm.  Since I’m not the greedy type, I shared them around with some friends (like my lawyer) to get their opinions on them.
Basically, yeah this stuff is good, works, it doesn’t smell over powering, and […]

What are your best safety razor tips?

I’ve been using a safety razor for, what, about a month now.  I am far from an expert, as my neck will attest to at the moment, but I have picked up a few things and I thought I’d share them with you (for those who are considering going old skool):

Patience isn’t just a virtue, […]

Product Review: Gillette Fusion Power Phenom–I don’t need vibrations to have a great shave

I was given a couple Gillette Fusion Power Phenom razors recently to take on a test drive.  You know that I’ve been a Gillette man since college and my first Atra razor.  It’s only been recently that I’ve moved to the old school (and better) safety razor.
So, are five blades better than one?  Does a […]

Father’s Day gift idea: Make him some shave soap, and the kids can help

Father’s Day is coming and if you’re looking for a last minute gift, how about making him some nice shave soap?
I got this in an email recently and saw these shave soap kits on this soap making site.  The kit is geared for kids to help/do and includes a shaving brush.  The kit lists for […]

We’re hooked in by marketing, convenience, and the color orange–Gillette has us hooked

Gillette, I believe, is the most popular brand of razor in North America.  Chances are you check the bathrooms or dop kits, you’re going to fine a Gillette product.
I was skimming my feeds (using Snackr, actually) and saw a bit from Alec Saunders (Alec I didn’t know you were into men’s grooming–swing on by you […]

Men’s Shaving Tips: Third shave with the Merkur Progress safety razor

It’s been a few days since I’ve started shaving with my new safety razor, I’ve been learning a lot about shaving and, by extension, skin care.
First thing was mantic59’s comment not to increase the dial too quickly on the Merkur (since it is an adjustable safety razor after all), which I did.  Except I made […]
