Essentials for Him Prepped shave oil: nice treat for your face

by Tris Hussey on June 24th, 2008

I hadn’t really heard of or tried pre-shave oils or shave oils until recently.  The premise is simple of course, a nice skin-friendly (good smelling is nice, but not critical to the function) oil that you put on before your shave creme/gel or use alone.

Essetials for Him Prepped shave oilRegardless of gel, creme, soap, or oil the idea around preparing your face so your whiskers are soft and the razor glides over not into you face.

Essentials for Him Prepped shave oil is made from good oils and to prep your face for the onslaught of shaving.

When I first tried this shave oil I think I tried it under one of my soaps.  I didn’t really notice a different.  I did like the nice citrus smell though.  Next time was with the safety and just the oil.  Okay this was a bad call.  Don’t do that, okay?

Today, though I really got a good feel for it and really liked the extra smoothness it lent to my shave.

Today I used my Lightfoot’s pine shave soap (from Kala Style, of course) and for my second pass thought I’d give the oil another go.

The first time I did the oil before the lather for second pass bit, I don’t think I used enough oil.  Today I used about three squirts and spread on my face.  I paid particular attention to my neck since that’s where I to have a knack for nicks.

I noticed a nice difference this time.  Nice glide on the razor.  Good close shave—that could also be from practice though—and only a couple of nicks (clearly I need more practice).

When would I use this?  Maybe not everyday, but certainly on a day where I had to shave, and shave well, two days in a row.  I think the oil helps to keep you from cutting yourself.  I’ve tried a couple third passes and if I’m going to do a third pass from now on I’m going to put this on first, then lather back up.

I haven’t tried it alone, but with a Fusion or Mach3 razor.  I will give that a shot, though.  It’s certainly worth finding out if it can help or even just feel good.

While this oil isn’t intended as a post-shave kind of treatment, I’d say that if your skin is really dry or irritated it wouldn’t hurt to use a squirt or two on your face or even a small patch on your arms or hands.

At $10.50 for a 1 oz bottle, this is a nice and affordable treat.

When you get a chance, try a few drops of plain old Corn Huskers Lotion massaged into wet skin before lathering up. Not a great scent but you may be suprised how effective it is as a pre-shave.
