Manscaping 101 Men\’s Grooming Tips from head to toe for looking and smelling great

Hair style tips: Don’t be scared of a little hair product

by Tris Hussey on April 10th, 2008

Woody's Headwax PomadeSo guys, what do you do with your hair in the morning besides the usual wash and brush?  Nothing?  Hmm.  Okay really it’s not a bad thing to put a little goop in your hair.

No, this isn’t like the 80s with the over done mousse (yeah did that) or the 90s with gel (yeah same).  Today a lot of guy’s hair cuts, like my current one, are short and tend to look good with a little of the spiky, tousled look to them.

Time to move beyond mousse and gel–paste isn’t just for paper anymore

What I’ve been told to use is a wax/paste kind of thing.  I tried Aveda control paste first and it worked really well.  It didn’t smell too “girly” and the “little dab will do ya” works well.  So yes, it lasts a long time.  Once I went the paste route I didn’t want to go back.  Right now I’m using Woody’s Headwax Pomade, which I really like.  All the benefits of the Aveda product (made with good stuff, lasts a long time, don’t need much, etc) but it smells good.  A nice vanilla scent.

The trick to pastes and waxes I’ve found is to put it on several fingers and run through your hair.  Yes, you can and I sometimes do, grab tufts of hair for spikes.  I like the all over tousled look so, I work it all in.  Wit my hair as short as it is, brushing isn’t really needed to tame my mane.

Come on, try it.  It won’t kill you.

I’ve been using a wax stick by Tigi Bed Head. It looks like a fat glue stick. I just run it all over my hair and style it with my fingers.

It gives you that messy look, without the hardness of gel.

Like you, I haven’t used a brush for years…I think I may have forgotten how.

That’s how you use it! I have one from Woody’s (more of the salon clearance) and I just had no idea! Thank you. When I ran out of the pomade above, I had the stick. I just used my fingers. Silly me.

Hmm, I haven’t tried the waxes. Though it doesn’t sound like the right product for my wacko frizzy long hair.

Then again, nothing else seems particularly good either.

Men’s long hair is different than women’s, don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. I have a terrible time finding product that works well in my hair.

Jason, man I wish I knew a solution off hand … however I may just have to visit my girlfriend’s stylist for the answer.

I have cowlick hell, so the only solution was Crew pomade applied to a haircut called a Caeser, where it’s short on the back and sides and is brushed towards the front (which is longer), and spiked straight up. Of course, this is if you want a wet look that is not rock-solid spiky that will cut you if you touch it.

I’ve tried wax when my hair was medium length and meh, I like it and think it does a good job but just not the right fit for me.

Yep, I noticed that when my hair is longer, wax not so good. I have one cowlick from hell. I’ve had a lot of bad haircuts because the stylist didn’t account for that.
