Manscaping 101: Grooming and shaving your nether regions, how to shave or trim your pubic hair

by Tris Hussey on April 11th, 2008

As guys, it has become socially accepted/acceptable, that women will trim or shave their pubic hair. Turns out, the tables are turning and women are starting to expect us guys to trim our hair down there too

This is my tenth post here on Manscaping 101 which is a milestone post because it means that this blog is now ready for launch.

In honour of that, I thought I’d hit a subject that will induce snickering, jokes, and fun.

This is real manscaping: shaving or trimming your pubic hair.

Yep, for real.  I know lots of jokes about this.  Even in the movies (e.g. American Wedding: Party Edition (Widescreen) ), but look at it this way.  If your girlfriend/partner/spouse says to you: “Honey I think it would be really hot/sexy if you/we…” you should listen.

Basic pubic shaving tips

Here are some links that I found in a basic search that are pretty good:

I also suggest this DVD–Dare to Bare DVD–which might be a little boring at times and it isn’t something to watch with the kids.  Yeah there is sex in there too.

Hands on how to on pubic shaving for guys

By this point you might be wondering … well have you?  Yes.  It isn’t that strange and yes, the “Honey I think…” comes from personal experience.  So let’s get down to it.

Basically you need:

  • A trimmer
  • a razor with a brand new blade
  • shaving cream (your choice, but I’d opt for “sensitive skin”)

The first time you shave the boys, you have a lot of trimming to do before you can shave.  I suggest doing this standing in the tub so you can rinse the fur down the drain.  I guess you could do it outside but …

Be careful.  Nicking with a trimmer hurts like a sonofbitch.  Trust me.

Next we’re at the shaving part.

If I were you, I’d take a nice, hot shower and soap (gently) the boys.  The idea here is to make the remaining hair easy to shave.

After showering follow the usual steps for shaving your face, except well lower.

Don’t use too much shaving cream.  It obscures your view.  Believe me, you don’t want this.

Rinse your razor often.  And don’t try for a perfect shave the first time.

When you’re done, use some nice lotion to reduce the chance of razor irritation.

How much to trim?

The how much to shave is up to you.  Just your scrotum or most with a little patch or all.  That’s your call and I’m not going there.

And on that note … let’s get this blog going!

Haha… I wish I could find the Penn & Teller clip via YouTube where they sucker these unsuspecting victims (male & female) into agreeing to try a waxing salon, and film them getting “brazilians” that reach into each and ever nook and crack… Ouch! Instead, I found an earlier segment from the same episode, also about body hair (its presence, not its absence):

The body hair is on the woman for the most part, but watch the guy at the end.

Penelope Trunk (BrazenCareerist) had a post recently about plastic surgery, and how soon that’ll be accepted very casually, the way many Gen-Yers routinely shave or wax their pubes. I don’t know — that hair itches something awful when it grows back, man!

    Fun blog topic, btw! :-)

Yule, you’re right the North American changes in beauty are interesting to say the least!

And the itch isn’t that bad after a day or two ;).

The itch is worth it to me. Sorry, there’s too many bonuses to cleanliness.

I am quite fond of the Phillips Bodygroom. Even if you want to go for baby smooth and so have to use a razor, the Bodygoom is quite a bit better for the preparatory work.

Its trimmer is finer than usual and so catches less, you still have to be careful but every bit helps. Then you can proceed to the shaver portion of the Bodygroom and trim to near razor levels of smoothness. This will reduce the amount of work with the razor and makes everything easier and safer.

Oh, and you can use it wet or dry.

My only complaint is the battery, you can not leave the device in the charging cradle constantly without damaging the battery. This means it sometimes isn’t fully charged when you want it. My battery has worn out due to a few time accidentally leaving it in the cradle. Still it lasted a year or two.

Oh, and they have one of the funniest viral Internet campaigns I have ever seen: http://www.shaveeverywhere.com/

    :)

Hi Jason, I think I remember that campaign. I always wondered how well that worked. My Phillips trimmer seems to be okay with staying on the charger … but well I hope it is.

    Hey Tris,

Good post. Well, I mean, being a girl and all, I *assume* they’re good tips. :-) Anyway, I wanted to mention a couple other things.

Guys, don’t just take it for granted that your gals will want you to shave because it seems to be all the rage right now. I like the look on some guys, yet on others it just doesn’t look right. Ask before you surprise her! :-D

On the other hand, a trim to neaten up is always welcome…and I’ll leave that thought right there.

Last, why not ask your partner to help you shave? It’s a very sensual experience for both of you.

Yes Lisa the tips work great for women too!

Good advice on asking, could be shocking if your lady doesn’t like the look and wow… luckily it all grows back, eventually.

Yes, letting her help you is fun (talk about trust) and it goes both ways (if she wants).

Yeah Tris, the BodyGroom works well. Either as a stand alone or as a prep for a proper shave.

My Phillips trimmer can stay in the charger fine so I was really frustrated that the BodyGroom can’t. And after having accidentally overcharged it to death I can vouch for it not being able to.

I saw the BodyGroom in the store today, gotta find a way to test it out.

I can say that both my girlfriend and I use it and love it. Works great for both of us, or at least it did until it died. I assume from overcharging.

I plan on buying another one, even though devices that won’t let me leave them in the charger irritate the crap out of me.

Come to think of it, I own at least three Phillips personal grooming products. A beard trimmer, a Sonicare toothbrush, and the BodyGroom. And the other two are specifically designed to be left in the charger all the time.

    What is with that?

That doesn’t make sense does it! Why not make all the devices smart enough to stay plugged in?

I just realized that my tangential kibitzing in another post would have been better placed here so I thought I would link to the comment in question so people interesting in this subject knew it was there.

Hopefully that long link doesn’t break things, if so I apologize in advance Tris.
