Manscaping 101 Men's Grooming Tips from head to toe for looking and smelling great

Manscaping skin and shaving tips:Is that pre-shave face wash worth it?

by Tris Hussey on May 2nd, 2008

It’s been almost a month here at Manscaping 101 and of the products I’ve received, the group that I didn’t know if I’d use was the whole pre-shave face wash bit.  Right now I have two Neutrogena products(Neutrogena Skin Clearing and Neutrogena Razor Defense Face Scrub)and two Every Man Jack products (Facial scrub and skin clearing scrub) that I’ve tried (I have the Every Man Jack exfoliating scrub as well, but haven’t tried it).

For me, I thought this is too much time to take shaving.  Come on I just washed my face in the shower, right?

Pre-shave face scrub, is it worth the time–maybe.

Being of Italian descent, my skin is a tad on the oily side.  As a teen I didn’t have a huge problem with acne, but those Oxy pads were a staple of my existence.

As an adult, I’m pretty lucky, my skin doesn’t have too many issues.  A zit here and there, but that’s it.  But the big thing about doing the whole pre-shave face scrub this is the amount of time needed vs. the benefit to both my skin and the shave.

After trying all four of these products, you know I think it might be worth it.  Maybe not everyday, but often especially if I haven’t shaved in a couple days.

The way I see it, these scrubs not only clean skin, but help soften the whiskers to make shaving better.

What about the skin clearing scrubs?  I gave them a try as well.  These scrubs can dry out your skin, as I’ve been reminded by the other B&S bloggers, so don’t go overboard with them.  Of the two products, I liked the Every Man Jack skin clearing scrub best because it was unscented.  Now, the Neutrogena ones were a bit strong in the scent department, but they did work really well.

A rose by any other name

So what makes a good scrub, good?  This was part of what I’ve been wondering.  None of them made my face turn red and such.  All made my face feel good and they did make my shaves more comfortable.  So what should be the deciding factor?  I’m leaning towards scent.  Okay a little is fine, but a lot?  Not so much.  Layering on a bunch of different scents might drive a lot of people nuts.

This week I did a whole, scrub, shave, balm thing … and my girlfriend was not impressed.  Simple appears to be better.  And I have to agree with her.

What about a nice, basic, “this smells clean” smell?

Bottom line

Granted, I haven’t used one scrub everyday, nor a scrub everyday in general, that said I’m going to keep using them.  Which one?  Not sure, but you’ll know when I do.

I really like the Clinique scrub & balm. A little expensive, but they don’t add any extra scents

    I didn’t know Clinque had a men’s line. Interesting.

I’m going to give the pre-shave wash a good try today as I didn’t shave this morning, but have to go to a party tonight. That, I think, is a true test of one of these pre-shaves.
