Manscaping 101 Men\’s Grooming Tips from head to toe for looking and smelling great

Nivea’s new line of shave gels and aftershave balms–the proof is in the scent

by Tris Hussey on April 11th, 2008

Since I do like a good shave I like to try new products.  Scott over on the Men’s Health blog did a review of a couple new Nivea shaving products–Nivea For Men Extreme Comfort–and liked them.

Scott made a great point about the scent of products, it has to be good and not overpowering for it to be a “keeper”.

I’ve tried a lot of post-shave balms that felt great but the fragrance was just, ugh.  I’ve contacted the folks responsible for Nivea PR to get some samples for me to try.

Maybe I’m just old school, but the smell of good-old Gillette Foamy means shaving to me.  Not to mention it’s inexpensive and works well.

What makes or breaks a shave cream or aftershave balm for you?

I don’t use modern shave cream … I’m an old school brush and bar kindof guy. Also, I’ve never gotten into aftershave.. because I’ve never liked the smell of any of it.

When I take this beard off, maybe I should investigate aftershave again.

I did the brush, soap and mug thing too for a while. But I stopped when I couldn’t find a descent brush or soap anymore.

Aftershave has been tough. Inexpensive ones smell terrible and ones that are also a balm for your face can have an odd smell.

But…there are lots of products out there and I’m going to try them!

I am getting back into aftershaves after watching ShaveTutor’s stuff. He got me thinking about them again. He mentions to avoid the alcohol based ones.

Most of them are too smelly for me and many are to chemically regardless of smell. (Ugh) My current one is by Burt’s Bees and I quite like it. (http://tinyurl.com/4vjf7k)

Burt’s Bees is good stuff. I did get the Nivea stuff in the mail today. I think they both smell good and my girlfriend agrees. I’ll give an update in the morning and a full review after a few days.
