Shaving tip: Deodorant to stop nick from bleeding
You might have seen this link in my daily link finds over the weekend, but I just had to highlight this one, because it surprised me:
4. Use your deodorant. This is my favorite tip. Most deodorants have aluminum chloride or a derivative of aluminum chloride like aluminium chlorohydrate. It acts as a hemostatic agent, allowing a blood clot to form quickly — in fact, aluminum chloride is what I use in clinic countless times each day to stop bleeding from skin biopsies. Apply a little bit to your fingertip or spray onto a Q-tip to apply. A styptic stick, if you happen to have one, works the same way. Source: How to Stop a Shaving Nick from Bleeding | The Derm Blog
Sure it makes sense, but wow, putting that on a shaving nick. Okay. Not that I’m going to try to nick myself to test this. I have used lip balm on hangnails, that does work great. Of course there is super glue too. Yes that really does work. You can buy the sterile stuff in the store (I think 3M makes it). I’ve used it on small cuts before with good results.
Does anyone have a styptic pencil in their cupboard now? I’ve heard aspirin can do the same thing, but I’m an ibuprofen man myself.
Of course there is the good old toilette paper technique. Works in a pinch, but it does look bad and when you pull it off, you could be a bleeder again.
Since I might be trying the double-edged razor thing soon, I looked over the weekend wow $45 for the cheapest one I found, I should have these tips on hand I think.

Yeah, the current make DE razors are all a bit spendy. Niche products and all that. But they last darn near forever. All the DE guys recommend having a styptic on hand while you are learning.
That said, my deodorant wouldn’t work. I specifically seek out non metallic deodorants. I don’t like the idea of frequent low dose absorption of metals, largely aluminum. Unproven Alzheimer’s link aside, it just worries me so I avoid it.
I use a Tom’s of Maine deodorant that works as well as anything I have ever used and contains only happy ingredients. :)
Hopefully Colgate doesn’t change their ingredients now that they own them.

I’ve tried Tom’s of Maine stuff (and the rock crystal thing) and found they didn’t work for me. As much as I wanted to try a non-aluminum product … I gotta have something that works too!

If you use quality shaving products, you won’t get nicks or cuts.

True, except when I’m in a rush and not paying attention. That’s when I nick and cut, especially my birthmark.

That is too bad. The regular formula Tom’s of Maine stuff works great for me.
You might try the Kiss-My-Face enzyme stuff: http://tinyurl.com/56dab3 it seemed both effective and strong. My skin didn’t like it, but that is the way it goes sometimes.
